How to live stream a church service
Streaming your service is one of the highest-impact things a church can do — it reaches the homebound, the traveling, the curious and the not-yet-ready. And you can start simpler than you think. This guide walks through the whole picture, then gives you a first-Sunday plan.
You don't need a big budget to begin. A single camera, clean audio and a laptop are enough to go on air well. You can add cameras and graphics later.
The four things every stream needs
- Video — a camera pointed at the stage (even a phone or webcam to start).
- Audio — a clean feed from your sound desk, not the camera's built-in mic.
- An encoder — software (or hardware) that packages video + audio and sends it out. Free options like OBS Studio are excellent.
- A platform — YouTube, Facebook, your website, or several at once.
How the pieces connect
Camera → into the computer (via a USB webcam, or an HDMI capture device for a real camera). Sound desk → into the same computer (via USB or an audio interface). Both land in your encoder (OBS or vMix), where you arrange the shot, add lower-thirds and titles, and press Go Live to send it to your platform.
Get the audio right — it matters more than the camera

Your first-Sunday checklist
- Camera framed on the stage, in focus, well-lit.
- Clean audio feed confirmed on headphones.
- Encoder scene built and tested; internet upload speed checked.
- Stream scheduled on your platform, link shared with the congregation.
- A dry run mid-week — never test for the first time on Sunday morning.
