How to get clean church audio for accurate verse detection
Any automatic verse-detection or live-captioning tool works in two steps: it transcribes what it hears, then matches that text to scripture. Which means the whole thing rises or falls on one factor above all others — the quality of the audio it's given. Get the sound right and detection feels magical. Feed it a muddy room mic and it struggles no matter how good the software is. Here's how to get it right.
The golden rule: give your software the same clean audio your congregation hears through the speakers, not a microphone pointed at the room.
1. Use a direct feed, not a room mic
A laptop's built-in microphone (or a mic sitting on a table) picks up room echo, air conditioning, shuffling, and music bleed — all of which confuse transcription. Instead, take a direct feed from your sound desk, the same signal that already carries the preacher's voice cleanly.
- Aux / matrix / monitor out — most mixers have a spare output you can send a mix of just the preacher's mic to.
- USB audio interface — take that output into a small USB interface (or a USB mixer) so it arrives at the PC as a clean input device.
- Avoid the room — if a direct feed truly isn't possible, a good wired mic close to the speaker beats a distant one, but a desk feed is always better.
2. Prioritise the preacher's voice
Detection cares about the spoken words, not the worship set. If you can, send a feed that is heavy on the preaching mic and light on music. A lapel or headset mic on the speaker gives the cleanest, most consistent voice — far better than a handheld passed around or a pulpit mic the speaker drifts away from.
3. Set sensible levels
Transcription likes a steady, healthy signal — not clipping, not whisper-quiet.
- Not too hot — if the signal is distorting or peaking into the red, words smear together.
- Not too quiet — a weak signal buried in noise is hard to make out. Aim for a strong, clean level that isn't clipping.
- Consistent — ride the preaching mic so its level stays even as the speaker moves.
4. Cut the noise at the source
Every bit of background noise is competition for the words. Mute channels that aren't needed during the sermon, watch for HVAC rumble, and keep music beds low while someone is speaking. Clean in, clean out.
5. Test before the service — every time
Five minutes of testing prevents most Sunday-morning surprises:
- Confirm the PC is listening to the right input device (the interface, not the built-in mic).
- Have someone read a familiar passage and watch that the transcription is clean and the verse is detected.
- Check levels with the actual service mic, at the volume the preacher will really use.
